150 million bank customers will be mobile by 2011
Juniper Research says there'll be over 150 million people using mobile phones as an additional tool for banking transactions by 2011. It says this figure just refers to existing customers of conventional banks rather than 'transformational banking', which offers mobile banking to customers that aren't within reach of branch-based banking. Juniper Research has previously forecast over 800 million people worldwide to be using some form of mobile banking by 2011. [Press release]

Adult mobile content market worth almost $5 billion in 5 years
Last week we were told that mobile betting was a recession-busting industry segment. This week Juniper Research says money spend on adult mobile video chat services will exceed $1 billion by 2011 - and the entire mobile adult content market will be worth £4.9 billion by 2013. Despite global economic conditions, the company says individual users' spending on video chat will be higher than previously forecast. Western Europe is and will remain the largest regional market for mobile adult services, followed by the Far East and China. Juniper Research [Press release]

Mobile betting to beat recession
Bets placed via mobile phones will double in 2009 to hit $3.6 billion (£2.4 billion), according to Juniper Research. Three-quarters of the money will come from traditional bookmaker-style betting, with with casino-type gambling the second-largest sector. 30% of all bets worldwide will come from the UK, although this will drop to 8% by 2013 as usage in other countries increases. Operators could make $52 billion from mobile content in 2013
Juniper Research says mobile network operators could make $52 billion from mobile content by 2013 - up from $23 billion in 2008 - but only if they make major changes to their business models. It says they must emphasise 'shared value creation’ to avoid becoming seen as ‘dumb pipes’ in the future. The total global mobile content market is expected to be worth $167 billion by 2013. Mobile gaming worth $10 billion by 2013
Juniper Research says the retail value of the global mobile games market is expected to rise from $5.4bn in 2008 to more than $10bn in 2013, although the potential for growth in many key markets is being dampened by poor marketing and limited on-portal revenue share for publishers. They say the Apple iPhone could end up being a popular choice for game publishers due to the revenue share offered by Apple, which could see the end of Java games. In addition, the volume of paid-for mobile game downloads has flatlined across North America and Western Europe - a phenomenon that was reported in February by M:Metrics. [Press release]

Money transfer and NFC will account for half of all mobile payments by 2013
A new report from Juniper Research says mobile money transfer and contactless Near Field Communications will account for 50% of the overall mobile payment market globally by 2013. It expects the mobile payments market to move from today's focus on digital goods (such as ringtones, music, and games) to customers transferring money and using NFC features to make purchases. In addition, the overall mobile payments market is expected to grow by a factor of ten between now and 2013. This week's Mobile News podcast includes an interview with Tom Whitaker of Masabi about the ways that m-payments and m-ticketing will change the way we use our mobiles. [Press release]

Over 400 million mobile ticketing users worldwide in 5 years
Juniper Research says there'll be over 400 million people wordwide using their mobile phones for tickets by 2013, although the technology isn't being introduced as quickly as expected. The company's study blames barcode reading issues, lack of reader infrastructure and availability of Near Field Communications handsets for the delays. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the leading sector is expected to be transport, followed by entertainment and sporting events. [Press release]

Only 14% of mobile TV owners will pay
A new study from Juniper Research says less than 14% of people with mobiles capable of receiving broadcast TV will pay for premium services. They've forecast that more than 330 million mobile customers worldwide will own TV-enabled handsets by 2013, with the US having the most users, but say most people will use them for free-to-air broadcasts. Revenue from users in 2013 is expected to be $2.7 billion, much lower than previous forecasts. [Press release]

Mobile user-generated content to be funded by ads
A new report from Juniper Research says advertising-funded social networks will provide most of the money for mobile user-generated content sites by 2013. It says the total value of the user-generated content market - social networking, dating and personal content delivery services - will rise from nearly $1.1 billion in 2008 to over $7.3 billion in 2013, with social networking overtaking dating by 2009 to become the largest revenue-generating segment. Advertising will account for more than half of mobile social networking revenue by the end of the forecast period. [Press release]

Mobile transactions worth $600bn worldwide by 2013
You wait ages for a story involving NFC, then three of them come along within a couple of days. Juniper Research says mobile money transfers and purchases of digital and physical goods will generate transactions worth over $600bn by 2013; that's an increase of almost ten times today's levels. Although today's mobile market is dominated by digital goods purchases such as ringtones, music, games and infotainment, the company's report says there are three high potential markets that offer major new opportunities for the future: contactless NFC, mobile money transfer and physical goods purchases via mobile devices. Juniper Research has published reports on mobile transactions and mobile shopping earlier this year. [Source: MarketWire.com]

30% of mobile users will be using local online search by 2013
By 2013, nearly 1.3 billion mobile users – 30% of all customers worldwide – will be using mobile search to find local services, according to a new report from Juniper Research. Advertising-supported results will drive the sector, although the quality of the user experience - combining relevant directory information with accurate location data - will be the most important factor. Juniper Research also says 43% of the revenue from mobile search advertising over the next five years will come from local search... and warns that "advertising overload" could discourage consumers from using the service. Returning to a study it first announced in March, the UK's Juniper Research says 2.6 billion mobile tickets and coupons will be issued worldwide to mobile phone users by 2011. Its new study says mobile coupons are becoming an increasingly important tool for companies, despite its March figures showing that just 1% of consumers are currently receiving coupons on their mobiles. The annual number of global mobile banking transactions is expected to rise from 2.7 billion in 2007 to 37 billion by 2011, led by the China/Far East region followed by Western Europe and the Indian sub-continent.
