Motorola cuts 3,000 mobile jobs
Motorola says it'll cut 3,000 jobs from its Mobile Devices business in 2009 and around 1,000 more from corporate functions and other business units. These are in addition to job losses announced at the end of last year. It's all part of the company's cost-cutting drive and, together with all the other recent cuts, is estimated to reduce spending in the Mobile Devices business by approximately $1.2 billion this year. 1 million T-Mobile G1 phones shipped this year
HTC says it expects to have shipped 1 million T-Mobile G1 handsets (and 3 million HTC Touch Diamond devices) by the end of 2008. The company's CEO denied rumours that it's been affected by the global economic slow-down and is planning to lay off staff. [Source: DigiTimes.com]

Nokia resolves German concerns
Nokia has announced a plan in association with the the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Bochum to help employment in the area following the closure of Nokia's Bochum facilities. Nokia is spending 20 million Euro on the project and is also adding the proceeds from the sale of its Bochum property. It has previously announced a redundancy package for workers. [Press release]

Nokia agrees compensation for German workers
Nokia has agreed a 200 million Euro compensation package for the 2,300 workers who'll lose their jobs when Nokia closes its manufacturing plant in Germany. The company was criticised by many people in Germany when it announced the closure of its Bochum facility earlier this year and its plans to move manufacturing to a cheaper European location. Around 300 staff are expected to be re-employed within Nokia's other German sites. [Nokia press release]

Another 2,600 job cuts at Motorola
Motorola has said it's cutting 2,600 jobs, bringing the total number of staff cuts to over 10,000 - more than 10% of its workfirce - since the beginning of 2007. It announced 3,500 job losses in January 2007 as part of a two-year cost-cutting plan, following this with another 4,000 job cuts in May 2007. [Source: Associated Press via Google]

Vodafone to cut 450 jobs
Vodafone says it's going to cut 450 management jobs, mainly from its Newbury HQ, and will create 460 new retail, sales and service positions. The company says this will help it focus on data sales and other services. It's also planning to add an extra 30 jobs to its online business. [Source: Reuters.com, CNNMoney.com]

Nokia closing German factory
Nokia has said it will stop making mobile devices in Germany and will close its Bochum site by mid-2008. Around 2,300 Nokia employees will be affected by this decision. Manufacturing will be moved to other European Nokia sites that are more cost-competitive. Two German MPs have already said they're responding by boycotting the Nokia brand.
